Suspended Solids (water) : Œ Solids that either float on the surface or are suspended in water, wastewater, or other liquids, and which are largely removable by laboratory filtering. The quantity of material removed from water in a laboratory test, as prescribed in STANDARD METHODS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF WATER AND WASTEWATER, and referred to as Total Suspended Solids Dried at 103-105°C.
Anaerobic Digestion (water) : Wastewater solids and water (about 5% solids, 95% water) are placed in a large tank where bacteria decompose the solids in the absence of dissolved oxygen. At least two general groups of bacteria act in balance: (1) SAPROPHYTIC bacteria break down complex solids to volatile acids, the most common of which are acetic and propionic acids; and (2) METHANE FERMENTERS break down the acids to methane, carbon dioxide, and water.
