Media (water) : The material in a trickling filter on which slime accumulates and organisms grow. As settled wastewater trickles over the media, organisms in the slime remove certain types of wastes thereby partially treating the wastewater. Also the material in a rotating biological contactor or in a gravity or pressure filter.
Nonvolatile Matter (water) : Material such as sand, salt, iron, calcium, and other mineral materials which are only slightly affected by the actions of organisms and are not lost on ignition of the dry solids at 550°C. Volatile materials are chemical substances usually of animal or plant origin. Also see INORGANIC WASTE and VOLATILE MATTER or VOLATILE SOLIDS.
