Tide Gate (water) : A gate with a flap suspended from a freeswinging horizontal hinge, usually placed at the end of a conduit discharging into a body of water having a fluctuating surface elevation. The gate is usually closed because of outside water pressure, but will open when the water head inside the pipe is great enough to overcome the outside pressure, the weight of the flap, and the friction of the hinge. Also called a BACKWATER GATE. Also see CHECK VALVE and FLAP GATE.
Alkalinity (water) : The capacity of water to neutralize acids. This capacity is caused by the water's content of carbonate, bicarbonate, hydroxide, and occasionally borate, silicate, and phosphate. Alkalinity is expressed in milligrams per liter of equivalent calcium carbonate. Alkalinity is not the same as pH because water does not have to be strongly basic (high pH) to have a high alkalinity. Alkalinity is a measure of how much acid must be added to a liquid to lower the pH to 4.5.

Polistiren: Strienden polimerleşen, 60-80°C yumuşayan, 145°C kaynayan bir plastik. Genel olarak asitlere, alkalilere ve suya karşı çok dayanıklı olan polistirenlerin özellikleri, molekül ağırlıklarına göre çok değişir. Kaynar su ve tiner, polistiren üzerinde iz bırakır. Bu sakıncasına karşın dış ülkelerde özellikle saydam bölme yapımında cam tuğla gibi kullanılmaktadır. Polistiren, soğuk su borusu yapımında da kullanılmıştır.polistiren, mor ötesi ışınlarının etkisi ile sararır.
