Cementation (water) : ΠA spontaneous electrochemical process that involves the reduction of a more electropositive (noble) species, for example, copper, silver, mercury, or cadmium, by electronegative (sacrificial) metals such as iron, zinc, or aluminum. This process is used to purify spent electrolytic solutions and for the treatment of wastewaters, leachates, and sludges bearing heavy metals. Also called ELECTROLYTIC RECOVERY. The process of heating two substances that are placed in contact with each other for the purpose of bringing about some change in one of them such as changing iron to steel by surrounding it with charcoal and then heating it.
Conductor (water) : ΠA substance, body, device or wire that readily conducts or carries electric current. A pipe which carries a liquid load from one point to another point. In a wastewater collection system, a conductor is often a large pipe with no service connections. Also called a CONDUIT, interceptor (see INTERCEPTING SEWER) or INTERCONNECTOR. 3) In plumbing, a line conducting water from the roof to the storm drain or other means of disposal. Also called a DOWNSPOUT. 4) In electricity, a substance, body, device or wire that readily conducts or carries electric current.
