Nitrification Stage (water) : A stage of decomposition that occurs in biological treatment processes when aerobic bacteria, using dissolved oxygen, change nitrogen compounds (ammonia and organic nitrogen) into oxidized nitrogen (usually nitrate). The secondstage BOD is sometimes referred to as the "nitrification stage" (firststage BOD is called the "carbonaceous stage").
Bacteria (water) : Bacteria are living organisms, microscopic in size, which usually consist of a single cell. Most bacteria use organic matter for their food and produce waste products as a result of their life processes.
