Synergistic Reaction (water) : An interaction between two or more individual compounds which produces an injurious effect upon the body (or an organism) which is GREATER than either of the substances alone would have produced.
Noncompatible Pollutants (water) : Those pollutants which are normally NOT removed by the POTW treatment system. These pollutants may be a toxic waste and may pass through the POTW untreated or interfere with the treatment system. Examples of noncompatible pollutants include heavy metals such as copper, nickel, lead, and zinc; organics such as methylene chloride, 1,1,1trichloroethylene, methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, and gasoline; or sludges containing toxic organics or metals.
